AMLC Networking at Code Talent

AMLC of the Rockies - April 21st, 2026

AMLC Networking Event

Event Recap

It was great to meet our new members!

Topics included an excellent "birds of a feather" conversation focused on how to talk tech with leaders and shared insights on building systems. We also discussed change management and navigating this new AI world.

Book Recommendations

  • The Man Who Lied to His Laptop by Clifford Nass and Corina Yen.
Argues that our interactions with computers reveal fundamental truths about human relationships, as we treat machines like people, exhibiting empathy, loyalty, and even lying to protect their "feelings". The book uses research from Nass's Stanford lab to provide counterintuitive rules for better communication, showing that flattery works, the "praise-criticism-praise" sandwich is ineffective, and understanding personality types (like introverts vs. extroverts) is key to persuasion and teamwork. It offers practical insights for improving professional and personal life by applying lessons from human-computer interaction to human-human interaction.
  • Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss and Tahl Raz.
A negotiation guide that uses FBI hostage negotiation tactics for everyday life, focusing on emotional intelligence, tactical empathy, and active listening instead of traditional compromise. The book teaches readers to use techniques like calibrated questioning and mirroring to influence outcomes in business, salary, and personal situations, arguing that human decisions are primarily emotional, not rational. (A major hurdle for technical resources!)
  • Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life by Marshall B. Rosenberg.
A guide to compassionate communication, teaching a process to connect with others by focusing on universal human needs and feelings, rather than judgment or blame. The book provides tools for expressing oneself honestly and empathetically, resolving conflicts peacefully, and building healthier relationships through a framework of observations, feelings, needs, and requests (OFNR). It emphasizes authenticity, deep listening, and moving beyond patterns that lead to anger and hostility.
    • Core Concepts: Consciousness (compassion, collaboration), Language (words that connect), Communication (asking for what you want, hearing others).
    • The NVC Process (OFNR): Observations, Feelings, Needs, and Requests.

A Technical Note

The SRE Handbook actually calls out that managing change and helping organizations adopt new technology is critical to business continuity and reliability in a fast-paced competitive world (Can anyone say AI).

"The big theme is that the world is moving fast and AI now took what was a bug in code and now says 'what if there is a bug in a brain'. This is a new world and to go far, we have to go together."
